Into the Woods and Into the Community
When I stepped into the role of Artistic Director for High Tide Theatrical and we began working in the Light Room Lounge performance space—crafting unique layouts for each show—I knew Into the Woods would be an especially interesting challenge. Creating an immersive forest environment felt like the perfect opportunity to offer something magical and fresh for audiences who’ve grown up with this show and traditional staging.
To bring that vision to life, we’ve had to lean heavily on our High Tide community. So many generous volunteers have stepped forward, sharing their time and talents to help us transform our space and elevate this production.
As we’ve worked, I’ve found myself reflecting on one of the show’s most resonant themes: the idea that life’s journey is filled with challenges, detours, and unexpected twists.
That theme mirrors the real-life experiences of our volunteers and the greater Springfield community. The characters in Into the Woods ultimately realize that no one is truly alone, and that our lives are deeply connected. It’s a message of shared responsibility, compassion, and the strength that comes from working together.
That same spirit lives in the work of the Drew Lewis Foundation. They focus on building stronger communities through education, support, and empowerment. From The Fairbanks—an old school turned community hub—to programs like RISE and the Blue House Project, they help individuals overcome barriers, build stability, and create lasting change. Their work brings resources to where they’re needed most and uplifts families from within.
Into the Woods asks us to face consequences, learn from experience, and rewrite our stories. The Drew Lewis Foundation gives people the chance to do just that—with guidance, connection, and community at the core.
At the heart of both the show and the Foundation is the belief that transformation doesn’t happen in isolation. It happens through shared journeys, honest reflection, and the understanding that, “people make mistakes… nice is different than good… and children will listen.”
We’re incredibly lucky to have the Drew Lewis Foundation in Springfield. High Tide Theatrical is honored to partner with them during our production of Into the Woods, and I can’t wait to share this meaningful and exciting experience with you all.
