Why I Came to High Tide — and Why I’m Not Leaving

I had the absolute honor of joining High Tide Theatrical in 2025 as the House Manager for HAIR this past year and never left. And honestly? Probably never will. Sorry, Grace and JDS, you’re stuck with me. And so are you, 417-land. I hope we become the bestest friends ever in 2026, because what I’ve learned over the past year is there’s something special going on in the Lightroom Lounge. The stories being told, the cast members, the crew, every single person that walks through the doors creates this magical world of art. TRUE art. The kind of art that gets you talking and brings communities together and I cannot stress out important that is for all of us right now. For communities to be together to laugh, to cry, to create, to suspend reality for just a damn second to open our minds and hearts. To tell the stories that stand the test of time, that make you think, that echo through generations. And THAT’S exactly what High Tide does best. Through those deeply personal stories, High Tide makes every story personal, not only to the actors, but to anyone who walks through the door, unapologetically. Yes, I’m talking about you, the theatre goers of High Tide! Seeing you walk through the door and seeing how each story this past season impacted you has been very special to me. However, seeing you walk into the community PROUD of what you just watched to go tell everyone? Priceless. You are a backbone to this theatre, and I cannot thank you enough.

My job as House Manager is to ensure that everyone who comes to see a performance at High Tide has that same magical experience every time they walk through the door. However, this job goes beyond scanning your ticket and sending you to Faith for a drink. (Btw, have you checked out our merch stand, yet? ‘Cause it’d be real cool if you did.) This also includes making sure that everyone feels and stays safe. How the hell does that involve the House Manager? Well, One, we have to look clean. The house crew sweeps, mops, and lint roll the seats before each show. Wet spots and debris on the floor? DANGER. Not safe. Not professional. Not cool. Two, Volunteer and Usher badges. Have a question? Look for someone with a High Tide badge and they will ALWAYS be willing to help you. Three, storage supplies. We have very limited storage space in our facilities, so totes are our friends.

So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you patrons of High Tide and a special shout out to our Rising Tide society. Without your continued support, and reoccurring donations, none of what we do would be possible. The badges, brooms and mops, storage totes, all come directly from your support and donations. Your support is what makes our shows run like butter, makes my job easier, and most importantly, allows us to keep making art. The kind of art you don’t see in Springfield. The kind of art that is proudly unapologetic. The kind of art that makes an impact on your community that you love and is also filled with the people that help make you grow as an artist and as a person. The kind that keeps you coming back home for more.
